The statute of limitations for passengers' compensation claims is not explicitly regulated in the EU Passenger Rights Ordinance. The respective national law applies. In Switzerland, passengers enjoy a relatively long limitation period of 10 years.
The current EU-wide Regulation 261/2004/EC strengthens the rights of passengers taking short-, medium- or long-haul flights within the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Ireland. The Regulation also includes passengers who land at an airport within the EU, provided the flight was operated by an EU airline. The amount of the compensation depends on the distance of the booked flight route.
